India claimed their first ever 3-0 series historic win in first-ever overseas whitewash, beating Sri Lanka in the third and the final Test in just three days by an innings and 171 runs at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele on Monday.
As expected, Indian bowlers did not take much time to wrap up Sri Lanka’s second innings on day 3. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 4 wickets which helped India to dismiss Sri Lanka for 181 during their follow-on in an extended second session.
Starting the third day at 19/1 with 9 wickets remaining in hand, Sri Lanka lost 3 wickets by the time they could add 15 more runs. However, Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin took early wickets but the hosts then fought back as both Chandimal and former skipper Mathews put on 65 runs partnership for the fifth wicket, to allow the team to go into lunch at 82 for 4, still trailing India’s first innings score of 487 by 270 runs.
But they quickly lost wickets in the post-lunch session after Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Dinesh Chandimal and India completed the series clean sweep, winning the 3rd Test by an innings and 171 runs.
