17-year-old girl, Supatra ‘Natty’ Sasuphan from Bangkok, suffers from the rare genetic condition Ambras Syndrome and has been once crowned the world’s hairiest girl.
She has been nicknamed after Star Wars character ‘Chewbacca’. Not just Chewbacca but she has also been called names like ‘Wolf Girl’ and ‘Monkey Face’.
Ambras Syndrome is a rare genetic disease in medical science, which is more commonly known as the ‘Werewolf Syndrome’ and is one of just 50 known sufferers of Ambras Syndrome since the Middle Ages.
Supatra has excessive growth of hair from tip to toe. She was crowned as the world’s hairiest girl at the age of 11 and made place in the Guinness World Record of the hairiest girl on planet Earth in 2010.
While at the Guinness World Records ceremony in Rome in 2010, ‘Nat’ said:
“I don’t feel any different to anyone else, and I’ve got lots of friends at school… Being hairy makes me special. There were a few people who used to tease me and call me monkey face but they don’t do it any more. I’m very used to this condition. I can’t feel the hair as it has always been like this. I don’t feel anything. It does sometimes make it difficult to see when it gets long. I hope I will be cured one day.”
She received laser treatment in her childhood, but it failed to work and her hair kept growing back as usual. Supatra has also not given up on her education. However she wanted to be a doctor and cure and help several people.
Now a days, it is not easy growing up with a disorder that distorts her physical appearance in such an apparent manner, but to credit the young woman, she has handled it incredibly.
But Supatra never gave up on herself and gradually was embraced by her community. She became a popular and outgoing child and is now married to a person she loves a lot.
A decade on from achieving the record, Supatra has now decided to start regularly shaving her face and body for the first time after getting married.
Finding happiness with her unnamed husband at only 17, Supatra now chooses to shave her face and has been sharing photos of her new look on social media receiving plenty of praise.
Not all tales have sad endings, and it’s just the beginning for strong and lovely Supatra and We wish her happiness in her future.
